Today is #WindrushDay, celebrating 75 years since the Empire Windrush first docked in Britain. This is a day to honour and remember the Windrush generation.
They came to the UK in the aftermath of World War II and helped to rebuild the country, including helping establish the NHS – laying the foundations for the modern Britain we enjoy today.
But the celebrations of their significant contribution to the UK are bittersweet. Too many families, including in Southwark, are still campaigning for Windrush justice after their mistreatment by the Tory Home Office.
It is beyond a disgrace that so many of the Windrush generation have been so badly treated. I hope that by highlighting their profound impact, we can properly honour and celebrate those who have done so much for us and help speed up their access to belated justice today.
