The Gray report is finally out.
Johnson has tried to airbrush his responsibility for the matter in the Commons today, after lying to Parliament previously about any parties occurring at all. He lacks any credibility and has been shown to lack judgement, humility and any sense of shame whilst millions of people obeyed the rules and made huge sacrifices throughout this shared national crisis.
The industrial scale lawbreaking is condemned in the report: “These events breached Covid regulations” and “Many of these events should not have been allowed to happen”. The report also condemns the disgusting, overprivileged, mistreatment of security and cleaning staff in Downing Street. It is very sad to read that hard working people were subjected to such foul abuse by drunken rulebreakers as they tried to go about their jobs.
In his response today, the Prime Minister claimed to be humble and to recognise the harm he has done, but then refused to take any responsibility and even called for the Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition to resign for being under investigation for a single event in Durham. Sir Keir Starmer has offered to resign if fined. Johnson has already been found guilty of breaking the law by the police, lives at the most fined address in the UK and has been subject to a civil service inquiry and now a Standards Committee investigation for misleading Parliament. His contempt for the public is on full show once again.
We should not forget that Johnson failed to sack the Home Secretary when found guilty of breaking the Ministerial code, did not sack Dominic Cummings for his rule breaking joyride to Barnard Castle, ignored Hanckock’s lawbreaking affair, lied to the Queen when illegally suspending Parliament, and even tried to allow cash for questions to cover up rule breaking by a Tory MP. His low standards disgrace our democracy and the only reason he has not gone yet is the Tory MPs lack any backbone or courage in the face of their Party being taken over by far right ideologues. Their fears will hopefully be overcome by the majority of British people at the next election when they are evicted from office.
