Thousands of leaseholders in Southwark are facing huge bills for compulsory fire safety works. The Government promised leaseholders would be ‘protected’ from these costs but, as ever, have broken their word.
I have worked cross-party to try and ease the pressure on leaseholders. I’ve also called for VAT to be scrapped on these safety works. Support for this campaign is growing and I’ve asked the Government to adopt this proposal when the Building Safety Bill returns to Parliament.
Not only will this save leaseholders and housing associations from huge bills, it will also extend the reach of the Building Safety Fund. I hope Ministers back this measure.
