Black Friday and Cyber Monday try to get us all to spend more on Christmas gifts and goodies, but too often online platforms do not ensure the products they help sell are safe or meet UK standards, so please buy carefully!
I’ve been working with the Bermondsey-based British Toy and Hobby Association (BTHA) to help protect everyone from dodgy products. Out of 255 toys sold through platforms like Amazon, BTHA found a shocking 48% had serious safety issues – and the big platforms do little to help currently.
I’ve tabled an Early Day Motion (a kind of Parliamentary petition) calling for greater protections and it has received support from MPs across all parties. One key ask is to ensure that all third party sellers have a a legal body in the UK responsible for the safety and compliance of the products they help sell. Simple – and would ensure no child is harmed inadvertently from gifts bought in good faith.
