Today I met with the Home Office Minister responsible for Afghan Resettlement to talk about support for asylum seekers who have been temporarily placed in Southwark.
Despite having 18 months to plan, the botched evacuation left countless allies behind and the Government has also let down many of those able to escape to the UK.
Here in Southwark, some were put up in unfit hostel accommodation which Public Health England advised the Home Office not to use. A Covid outbreak was predictable but put our whole community and local NHS at risk.
Our council has been doing great support work despite little
Communication from the Home Office; local schools have stepped up and stepped in; and Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers has been doing a fantastic job to help everyone here – and I am proud my local Labour members have donated £1,200 for the centre.
I hope Home Office communications and resources improve to ensure the settling process is done better locally and across the country.
