It was hugely moving to speak and lay a wreath today at the rededication of the War Memorial on West Lane, which borders Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. At exactly 100 years ago to the minute, this monument, which was organised by the local community, was originally unveiled and dedicated.
Despite all the horrors the area endured during World War II which the memorial is also now dedicated to, and the ever changing landscape around it, it is still with us today – despite the disgusting vandalism it recently faced. I hope that in another 100 years people will still be coming here to honour the sacrifices made for our freedoms.
