Today’s unemployment figures paint a grim picture for young people who have taken the largest hit during the pandemic. In London, unemployment for 16-24 year olds rose dramatically in the last year, whilst in Southwark it has tripled sadly.
Sadly, whilst young people have been let down, Ministers have been falling over themselves to get at the public funds during the crisis and lining their mates’ pockets. Under the last Tory Government sleaze was largely confined to the backbenches but under Johnson it goes right to the top.
The Government’s claimed the ‘Kickstart’ scheme would create jobs but is far behind schedule with employers reporting routine delays despite vacancies and young people needing work. I was shocked to learn that just 11 people locally had been helped by the scheme, including some on school work experience placements. I am now working with local jobcentres and businesses to try fast track placements to improve this dire situation.
