I’ve been pressing the Department of Education to be honest about funding cuts to schools. Ministers have repeatedly claimed that they did not have this information despite schools submitting the data months ago.
I accessed the figure through the local education authority and Southwark schools face a staggering £1.2 million cut, with one school losing £60,000.
This is a direct hit on school budgets despite all the hard work over the last year, continuing to teach children of key workers in person and running remote learning online. The gaffe-prone education department is now punishing children whose parents have lost work due to covid as the cut targets kids from disadvantaged backgrounds.
I took local headteachers to meet the Schools Minister to raise concerns over this nasty cut and hope we see another u-turn soon, to avoid Southwark children losing out.
