Yesterday, the Tory Government voted down amendments to the Fire Safety Bill which would have implemented the findings of the Grenfell Inquiry and protected leaseholders from footing the bill for fire safety costs.
The Government rejected all amendments that sought to ensure that leaseholders would not be responsible for paying for extra safety measures whilst they wait for unsafe cladding to be removed from their buildings. I’ve met with many anxious constituents who are being forced to stump up astronomical amounts, with one block paying as much as £42,000 per month for its ‘waking watch’ interim measure.
Four years after the tragedy of Grenfell and still the Government have chosen to do nothing, whilst thousands of leaseholders who have spent years saving to get on the property ladder are trapped in homes they cannot even get surveyed to prove they’re safe in most circumstances. If you’re affected by this issue, please complete my survey here: tinyurl.com/ews1nc . This fight is not over and I will continue to do everything I can to help end the cladding scandal.
