The British Toy and Hobby Association (BTHA) are based in Southwark and I’ve campaigned with them since 2015 to crack down on fake and dangerous toys being sold online.
The BTHA recently reported that 60% of children’s toys sold online were unsafe or dangerous. This is hugely worrying, especially with a further growth in online sales during the pandemic. Parents and carers need to know the volume of fake and unlawful toys being sold on trusted platforms which don’t meet UK safety standards.
The law needs changing to tackle this problem. Online marketplaces should be liable for ensuring the products sold on their platforms are not dangerous. I hope the Government acts now in the run up to Christmas to protect our children as well as the British businesses and jobs making genuine, safe toys.
