Yesterday the Government was forced to announce some extra help for families this winter to stop children going hungry.
This was in response to Marcus Rashford’s amazing campaign about school meals which I and the Labour Party backed and had the support of many people here in Southwark.
Three weeks ago, Tory MPs voted to prevent any help being provided in the holidays. The massive public backlash and offers of support for struggling families from businesses, charities and other organisations, including Southwark Council, secures this new Government u-turn.
But it is again stopgap measures and avoids the scale and persistence of the problem created since 2010. I asked the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions whether she would scrap the policies that have caused families to struggle: the benefit cap; the five week delay for Universal Credit; and restricting access to public funds. If Ministers continue to fail to listen and ignore these problems, we will need even more Marcus Rashford’s to help continue the campaign!
