Individuals and their families who are granted refugee status in the UK are given just 28 days to find a job and home before having to vacate temporary accommodation. This situation is even worse for anyone who seeks Universal Credit – with the five week minimum delay senselessly putting people at risk of destitution.
I wrote this piece for the Independent along with a Lib Dem and Tory MP working on the cross-party Refugee, Asylum and Migration Policy project calling on the Government to set up a better system not just for the pandemic, but to permanently end the 28 day ‘move on period’.
