Not content with reducing our global standing through Brexit and his terrible handling of the coronavirus pandemic, Boris Johnson is now planning to merge the Department of International Development with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Dismantling a department that has made the UK a world leader in fighting poverty will further risk our influence abroad. Now is not the time for a restructure and I fear this is being announced to distract us from the Government’s long list of other failures.
I will use my position on the Foreign Affairs Committee to make sure the Government does not abandon its commitment to spend 0.7% of GDP on foreign aid.
