Thanks to PCs Angus and Charlesworth for letting me join their patrol yesterday! The police do an incredible job in very challenging circumstances taking action on antisocial behaviour, drug dealing and weapons searches amongst many other issues. On the shift yesterday the officers focused on areas I have received many complaints about, including the Manor Estate and Elgar Street where drug dealing and antisocial behaviour were disrupted.
Crime and antisocial behaviour are regular concerns in my inbox and, sadly, Government cuts have meant 400 fewer police officers and PCSOs in Southwark since 2010. Sadiq Khan as Mayor has kept 1,000 police on the streets but the effect of the overall losses are undeniable. The new PM Boris Johnson voted for the cuts previously, implemented them when he was Mayor and now says he wants some police officers back. I will be seeking the reinstatement of the officers Southwark needs to ensure community safety is restored and that officers are no longer over-stretched and under-resourced.
