I chair the Parliamentary Group on Foodbanks and today hosted the launch of a report from Human Rights Watch which finds a clear link between welfare cuts and the rise in foodbank use. The report found that Universal Credit was one of the main causes of food poverty, something I have seen in weekly advice surgeries for local people.

At the start of the school holidays it is shameful that hundreds of Southwark kids will go hungry. Local foodbanks and Central Southwark Community Hub are doing what they can, but the problem will only be tackled through Government action. The Government is ignoring the scale of the crisis and the impact of their benefit cuts and delays on local disabled people, children and even working people using foodbanks.
