Many local people in Southwark have been affected by the Government’s appalling treatment of the Windrush generation. The shameful ‘hostile environment’ immigration policy instigated by Theresa May has taken its toll in our borough and beyond, with families being torn apart and those who have laid down roots in communities being told they have no right to stay in UK. It is also widely operational and still damaging people’s lives.

Today I questioned Foreign Secretary and Tory leadership candidate Jeremy Hunt on the impact of the Windrush scandal on the UK’s relationship with other Commonwealth countries. No Government should ever be allowed to use the immigration system to create second class citizens out of people who have every right to live their lives here. Hunt seemed unaware of any impact of his Government’s policies sadly.
