Southwark has a higher prevalence of HIV than the national average for a mixture of reasons. PrEP is a drug which is proven to extinguish the risk of HIV transmission. I am supporting the Terrence Higgins Trust and other organisations as well as activists from Southwark who have campaigned to get Public Health England to extend the numbers able to participate in the PrEP trial.
PrEP should be accessible as a necessity rather than an arbitrary rationing being imposed which increases risks of transmission. I’ve written to the Equalities Minister to urge her to press health colleagues to make the drug readily available.
